Canadian Barn Dance CHALLENGE - March 2020
During the first lock-down back in March 2020, I sent out a challenge to friends, to learn The Canadian Barn Dance and send me recordings of themselves doing it!
Here are the results: from perfect 10 scores to 'new interpretations and 'freestyle'; from rooftop terraces to basements, indoors and out, dressed up for the occasion, with partners and without....from Scotland to Italy to Spain!
Beginners to experts, you all gave it a shot and it was great to see you having a nice time.
Even a dog joins in!
......and a cat tries to escape!
A BIG thank you to everyone who took part - I hope it won't be long before
we can all dance ceilidh again together!

Kick ass
what a blessing. genius. truly amazing ❤️
Nice playing. Superb technique
Echoing between Norwegian fjords. Soaring!!!
Sounds like an elk’s mating call. I wonder if that’s the point..?
Interesting??
I don't really think so, because we don't have elks in Scandinavia. But I do hear that the different notes of an elk call is accentuated using natural harmonics, just like the willow flute. Many instruments are though. If you don't know what natural harmonics are, look up Andrew Huang explaining harmonics. He explains it very well.
Great sound well played Great tunes
Hello David, I hope you are fine. We meet many years ago when I was student in Basil Peterson. im from Brasil and Nina was at my place some times. Please could you please give me her e-mail address or other method to catcall her. I'll be in. Scotland in march next year and I hope see you all.
I just told Nina and she sent an email to the address she had from before. If you have a new e-mail address, send it to me and I'll pass it on.
Revolutionary era party music? American pop before anyone realized Africa and the British Islands were giving birth to something new here? Playing with bass and drums will seem like cheating to me from now on. This is how you rock it.
This is unbelievable
Holy sweet Jesus. 👌👌
This man could sing the friggin phone book and I would listen
Lucky church !
l like
Great. Many salutes to Niall Kenny
was raised to the radio and listening to the radio ballads and loved the story of John Axon - it still makes me cry now.

A great teaching aid. Well executed.
Beautiful
love this music
Love the look of the bass singer, beautiful. ;-)
Takes me back to train journeys back from gigs in Glasgow to Cumbernauld, with Fraser blawin' awa' in time to the train's rhythm.
Thank you,liked!
i always have tears gathered in my eyes whenever i hear this short Chorus....
Hi David, i had ceilidh two weeks ago in edinburgh, it was amazing, i'd love if you came to my school in Italy
It is too long , short flute is better , and rowan bark flute is very strong , willow bark is weak .
birch is good too!
This is OUR traditional way. The sounds is what we want.
Overtone flutes like this one are better with longer, thinner pipes, since it makes the higher partials less piercingly high
i have another style windflute from eldertree....even longer....and precious sound
Did you find anything positive about the flute or is simply nothing about it to your liking?
Love the sound of the bass singer, beautiful. The choir I sing in has this piece on its repertoire as well. This is a prayer needing a humble, modest approach, all singers should sound as one instrument. Not a piece to sing as individual voices but blend together. It should be sung much more legato, in long lines. My opinion, of course.
What a great way to play the Bodhran: 12 bar blues ...Classic.
Brian mate can u giv me them cords
This man can send the chills up your spine. Yeah.
Wow!
mavelles!
!!!Bellísima obra, es una de mis preferidas, en semanasanta.!!🌿
Do you have any CD's?Wonderful voice. What tuning do you use?
Hello doodeen, Thanks for the kind words. In answer to your first question, yes I do have CDs. You can find them on my website at www.danmckinnon.ca as well as at my performances. Regarding the tuning, for this song I use the DADGAD tuning. It's a wonderful song called "Every Man's Heart", written by Archie Fisher from Scotland and he very kindly gave me permission to record it on my fifth CD, 'Fields of Dreams and Glory'. Best wishes ~ Dan
favorite version of this song
